”Thank you everyone who voted me in University Council election. Though we couldn’t make to final but I believe we still can make our vision into reality because there is always a way……….. ”
One thing I am passionate about is helping other. My happiness come within when I am able to offer my helping hands to other. With a vision to make our university, a place where everyone is inspired to be what they want to be, I gave my nomination in the University Council Election. Well, my nominations was at the last half hour. I checked an email notification which was all about University Council Election and I just had half an hour to apply for the nomination.
At first, I thought I could not make it to the nomination since I only had half an hour left but something deep from inside heart said, you have to because I was looking for an opportunity to give something valuable to the University and it was one of the best platform. So, without any delay, I submitted my Expression of Interest and the next week, I got nominated as an Election Candidate.
Well, getting a nomination was not as challenging as it was to appeal for the vote with a cause. To be honest, I had no any plan for election campaign unless one of my friends Subash Koirala suggested me to actually face the voters and approach to them with a cause. That inspired me to actually carry out my election campaign and face the audience. Other important inspiring moment was one of my Professor Stephanie from Design it. One thing that struck in my mind from her is Just Do it and the ways will come across. Yes, it was true. As I started my election Campaign, different ideas were flourished in my mind and I happened to figure out the ways……
I started my campaign with A poster.
From sticking my poster in the notice boards of every floor of my University to the distributing in hand to the uni students and giving the speech in class, International cafe and uploading in the Instagram. Almost everyday, I carried out around two hour campaign where I talked individually with most of the students by going in the basement, in every level and standing in front of the lift in the ground level.
At an initial level, to be honest, there was a feeling like I need to win this election. But as I got connected with the different students, talking with them I found that nobody cares about the election. Most of them even don’t check their email and even if they do, they don’t go through. I tried to figure out why was that?
There were couple of reasons they shared with me. Some of them were:
- They didn’t check their email so often.
- They didn’t know the candidates personally.
- No any candidates came to them for Votes.
- Some them said they were not interested in Politics.
- They had no idea about it.
- They were busy in Assignment.
The first week campaign was so much frustrating to me because of all these reasons.
The second week, I changed my feeling of winning election to the making uni students aware of their right to vote. I believe everyone of Uni students have right to vote and they should use their right to vote for the right person in order to get the right result. So, now I was focused totally on making them aware of University Council Election and make sure that they use their right to vote.
One of the student asked me,” what you will do for the Nepalese student if you get elected?.”
My answers was pretty straight forward – ” I apologize that I am not here to work for Nepalese students and I am also not here to work for International student though I am an international student from Nepal. I am here actually to work for the university students. ” And I really mean it.
On the last two days of the campaign, there was feeling of Happiness within me. This was not because I would win the Election but this was because of the response I got from the others. Most of their response were that they voted and they will vote using their right to Vote. I feel like I did my part of job on making this election successful by involving as much students as I could.
One thing I could say with full confidence that I never forced other to vote me nor I showed them how to vote straight a way unless they asked me how to vote. My intention was not to get more votes as I said earlier. I have changed my perception from getting vote to making other aware of their right to vote. And I can proudly say that I did that.
Some of you might say, who said you to do or why you need to do?
Well, there was no one to force and make me do and I was not being paid as well. It was my own cause, my own desire to make this happen and my own passion to learn in everyday of my life.
At the end, I would like to apologize for all the Voters that I couldn’t make it to final but your believes and vote are always precious to me. I believe this is not only the way to make our vision into reality. There is always a way……..
Failure is not an obstacle, but it, in fact, is the inspiration to move forward…………..
And Lets move together to make it happen……
